Who We Are

Somosis draws its name from two words: somatic—of the body—and osmosis—the quiet movement of something across a boundary, without force. Both words are doing real work in the name.

We found each other the way most people find their people: not by searching, but by moving. Contact improvisation gave us a shared language. Dancing together became the room where each of us could finally show up as exactly who we were—no performance, no explanation, just present.

Somewhere in that practice, the dance started working on us differently. It became a way to move through the things the mind couldn't hold alone—grief, uncertainty, joy that didn't fit anywhere else. The body already knew what to do. We started calling it healing because that's what it was.

What we have now is the desire to reach outward. Not to teach or recruit—but to find the places where someone might be quietly ready for what we've found, and let them arrive the same way we did: through movement, through recognition, through the body leading the way.

Our Intentions

We are here to offer invitation without force. That matters. Too much of modern attention is grabbed, crowded, cornered, extracted. We want none of that texture in what we make.

Instead, we leave room. Room for curiosity to arrive under its own power. Room for a person to sense something and choose whether to come closer. Room for the answer to be yes, no, or not yet.

That is not passivity. It is respect with enough confidence to let recognition happen on its own terms.

Our Community

Somosis belongs to a larger rhythm already moving through Houston: a community of dancers, organizers, artists, and seekers creating spaces where expression is welcomed and attention is shared rather than consumed.

That larger field matters. No group becomes meaningful in isolation. We are strengthened by the spaces that hold us, the events that gather us, and the people who keep choosing to show up with care.

Houston's movement community has been growing quietly for years — weekly ecstatic dance gatherings, contact improvisation jams, somatic workshops — each one a different doorway into the same practice: learning to move honestly, to listen with the body, and to share presence without the usual social performance.

What happens in these spaces is not only movement. It is belonging. The discovery that healing can be collective, that a room full of people moving honestly together creates something none of them could create alone.

The Interchange

The Interchange is a Houston movement space and community hub dedicated to contact improvisation, ecstatic dance, and the embodied arts. It is more than a venue — it is the living center of Houston's movement community, a place where dancers gather weekly, where trust is cultivated over years, and where the practices we love have a home.

The Interchange is the official home of Ecstatic Dance Houston, hosting the weekly gatherings that bring the broader Houston movement community together. It is where many of us in Somosis practice. Ecstatic Dance Houston

Ecstatic Dance is a global movement practice — a weekly gathering where people come together to move freely, without choreography or instruction, guided only by music that travels through rhythm, breath, and silence.

The format is intentionally simple: no talking on the dance floor, no alcohol, no judgment. What emerges inside that simplicity is different every time — playful, cathartic, meditative, and often healing. The body gets to lead. The mind gets to rest.

Houston's ecstatic dance community has been gathering for years and continues to grow. The space is welcoming and the floor asks nothing of you except your presence. If you have never been, the first time is the hardest step. After that, most people keep coming back.

Our Values
